What You Can Do with This Tool
JPG is the most common image format from cameras, phones and screenshots. When you upload a JPG to this tool, the background gets removed and you receive a PNG file back. The format changes because JPG does not support transparency. There's simply no way to save a transparent background in a JPG file.
The conversion from JPG to transparent PNG preserves all the quality and detail of your original photo. Colors, sharpness and resolution stay the same. Only the background pixels are removed and replaced with transparency.
One thing to watch for: JPG files sometimes have compression artifacts, which are tiny blocky patterns around edges. These can make background removal slightly less clean compared to a high-quality source image. If you notice rough edges on your cutout, try uploading a higher resolution version of the same photo. Larger images give the tool more pixel data to work with, resulting in smoother edges on the final cutout.
Frequently Asked Questions
I removed the background from my JPG and saved it as JPG again, but the background is white instead of transparent. Why?
JPG doesn't support transparency. When you save a transparent image as JPG, the transparent areas automatically fill with white. To keep the transparency, you need to save as PNG. Our tool gives you a PNG download by default for exactly this reason.
When I convert my JPG to transparent PNG, the file size jumps from 200KB to 3MB. Is that normal?
Yes, that's totally normal. JPG uses heavy compression to keep files small, which means some quality gets thrown away. PNG is lossless - it keeps every pixel intact, so files are bigger. The tradeoff is worth it when you need transparency or plan to edit the image further.
My original JPG is already kind of blurry from compression. Will removing the background and saving as PNG make it look better?
No. Converting from JPG to PNG doesn't restore lost quality. Once JPEG compression removes detail, it's gone for good. PNG just preserves whatever quality is left without making it worse. If your source photo is blurry, the cutout will be too.
The edges of my cutout have weird blocky artifacts from the original JPEG compression. Any fix?
JPEG compression creates blocky artifacts especially around sharp edges, and those become very visible after background removal. Our edge refinement helps smooth some of this out. For cleaner results, try to start with a high-quality JPG - the less compressed the original, the cleaner the cutout.
Can I batch process a bunch of JPGs to transparent PNGs?
This JPG tool is made for one file at a time. For bulk processing, head over to our Bulk Background Remover - you can upload multiple JPGs and download all the transparent PNGs at once.
