What You Can Do with This Tool

Official ID photos have strict sizing and composition requirements that vary by country. US passport photos must be 2x2 inches (51x51 mm). UK passport photos are 35x45 mm. EU countries generally follow the ICAO standard at 35x45 mm. Indian passport photos are 2x2 inches, same as the US.

Head position matters. Your face should be centered in the frame with the top of your head near the top edge. Eyes should be roughly in the center line of the photo. Most countries require a neutral expression with mouth closed. Some allow a slight smile, but teeth showing can cause rejection in strict systems.

Background rules are equally important. White or off-white is required by most countries. No patterns, no shadows and no other people visible in the background. This tool helps you crop and format your photo to meet these standards.

Take your original photo against a plain wall with even lighting. Avoid flash if possible, as it creates harsh shadows. Natural daylight from a window gives the most even, flattering light for ID photos. Then use this tool to get the exact crop and dimensions right.

Frequently Asked Questions

My passport photo keeps getting rejected because the head size is wrong. How do I get the 1-to-1⅝ inch measurement right?

Our tool has country-specific templates with guides that show exactly where the top of your head and the bottom of your chin should fall. Select your country (US, UK, etc.) and the tool overlays the size requirements on your photo. Adjust your crop until your head fits within the guides.

How do I print passport photos at home without paying $15 at CVS?

Create your passport photo here, then use the 4x6 print template option. It places multiple passport-sized photos on a standard 4x6 layout. Print it at any photo kiosk (Walmart, Target) for about 35 cents, or use your home printer on glossy photo paper. You get 4-6 passport photos for the price of one regular print.

What are the exact digital dimensions for a US passport photo?

2x2 inches. At 300 DPI (which is what you need for printing), that's 600x600 pixels. Our tool automatically crops and resizes to this exact specification when you select "US Passport" from the country list.

My passport photo was rejected because of shadows behind me. I used my phone flash. What should I do?

Never use flash for passport photos. It creates harsh shadows and uneven lighting. Stand facing a window during daytime for soft, even light. Or stand about 2 feet in front of a white wall with a room light behind you (not behind the wall). If you already have a photo with shadows, our background replacement can help. It removes the original background (shadows included) and replaces it with a clean solid color.

Is it okay to use this tool to change my passport photo background, or will they reject AI-edited photos?

Light editing like background cleanup is generally accepted, but heavy editing is risky. The key is to avoid visible artifacts: no glowing edges, no blurred outlines, no obviously fake background. Our edge processing is designed to minimize these tells. But always start with the best photo you can take. The less the tool needs to fix, the more natural the result.
